The strategy gap between founders and marketers

You don’t need to become a marketer. But you do need to equip them. This post breaks down why founders and marketers often misfire — and how to align fast for traction that lasts.

Founders want traction.

Marketers ask for clarity.

This disconnect isn’t personal—it’s structural. But left unresolved, it creates tension, stalls momentum, and wastes effort.

Sound familiar?

You’ve hired a marketer, expecting momentum. But after a few weeks, instead of leads, you're fielding questions: “Who’s our ICP?” “What’s the positioning?” “What does success look like?”

To you, it feels like stalling. To them, it’s the only way to do the job well.

The strategy gap is real

Founders want traction, often saying, "Just get us more leads!" But marketers, aiming for sustainable growth, typically respond with:

  • Who’s our ideal customer?
  • What unique problem do we solve for them?
  • And how does our message truly stand out?

You don’t need to become a marketer. But you do need to equip them.

What marketers need from you (before they can deliver):

  1. A clear ICP (Ideal Customer Profile)
Not just “small businesses.” Who exactly are they? What role, sector, budget, pain point? What signals tell us they’re ready?
    ‍
  2. A defined value proposition
What problem do we solve better or differently than others? What does success look like for our customer?
    ‍
  3. Why now? (timing matters)
Why is this urgent or relevant in the current market? What macro trends or pain points make this the right moment to sell?
→ This helps marketers understand the market urgency and tailor messages that resonate with real, current needs, not just general benefits.
    ‍
  4. A north star metric
Are we trying to grow the top of the funnel? Improve trial-to-paid? Increase retention?
→ One goal brings clarity. Five goals kill focus.

What happens without it

  • You burn cycles on campaigns that never land.
  • Your marketer “feels slow” because they’re busy trying to reverse-engineer the strategy you never articulated.
  • You confuse motion with progress.
  • You assume everyone is your customer, and end up resonating with no one.

What happens with it

  • Marketing becomes a growth function, not a guessing game.
  • You get to test and learn quickly, instead of thrashing through vague ideas.
  • Everyone aligns around the same definition of traction.

Final thought

Marketing isn’t just a cost; it’s a powerful engine for real growth. But its fuel is strategic clarity. Before you ask a marketer to “go get customers,” empower them by defining who those customers are, why they absolutely need your solution, and how you genuinely connect with them.

Ready to start?

Write down your top three customer pain points. Clarify your “why now.” Then give your marketer the tools to move fast and smart.

Close the gap.

Build the bridge.

That’s how founders and marketers move forward—together.
